Rafel Joan

Palma de Mallorca, 1957

Rafel Joan creates a very personal language in the treatment of landscape. His painting synthesizes the real appearance of the landscape to generate an intuitive version of his own, even going so far as to get on a paraglider and dive under the Mediterranean to seek new perspectives and points of view for his works. The result is often closer to abstraction than to the point of reference, however in the overall vision we always find some element that keeps us connected to nature.

His landscapes are lyrical and contemplative, highly poetic and close to symbolism. They possess a great chromatic richness, which translates into almost hypnotic images. The protagonist of all his works is natural light, either in its maximum splendor or close to sunset. Sometimes, it fragments into suspended particles that move among the leaves and branches of trees or on the bottom of the sea, generating the effect of bellumes, a Mallorcan word that refers to the fleeting patches of light that we see with our eyes closed when something has dazzled us.

He has been presenting his work regularly since 1983 in prestigious galleries in Mallorca, Valencia and Barcelona, where since 1993 he has been exhibiting in Galería Trama and Sala Parés. His work appears in important collections around the world, and prominent writers and poets have reflected on his painting.
