Garikoitz Cuevas

Sanlúcar de Barrameda, 1968

“Garikoitz Cuevas is not a painter. […] well, let’s clarify: Garikoitz Cuevas is not just a painter. He is also a poet who does not work with words but with light”. This is how Josan Hatero describes the work of Garikoitz Cuevas. Indeed, poetry is strongly linked to his work.

This poetic and expressive quality of his work is achieved especially through the technique of décollage, among others. By superimposing layers of different elaborations and altering them through the action of pulling out fragments, Garikoitz achieves unique effects that, although flirting with chaos, are not exclusively the result of chance. Cuevas carefully selects on which parts of the canvas he applies the preparations ─in which he mixes lime, polymers, pigments or fibers, to achieve very specific effects─ and which will be the method to extract these finishes, even going so far as to set fire to the canvas. This process creates pieces of enormous textural power.

The unmistakable artistic personality of Garikoitz Cuevas has led him to exhibit in Madrid, Paris, Milan and Mexico City, and to be recognized in numerous national competitions, making his work present in some of the main collections in Spain. He has been exhibiting at Sala Parés since 2004.
