Brigitte Szenczi
Budapest (Hungary), 1943
Brigitte Szenczi and Juan Antonio Mañas are a singular artistic couple who move in spaces that are outside the trends and fashions of painting. Each one is the author of his own paintings, but they exhibit together, establishing a dialogue and symbiosis that offers a pictorial story evocative of mythology, dreams, science, philosophy, humor and visual culture, which count as some of the recurring themes in their work.
Brigitte Szenczi’s work goes back to mythology from its application to the oneiric plane and to memory. She recovers the romantic vision of the landscape and, at times, resorts to forced perspectives and fantastic architecture. She draws her inspiration from the world of dreams, fairy tales and fantasy, in search of surprising images. Her language is of a precise, metaphysical realism with a strong spiritual component. Through her paintings, she creates spaces in which historical references are intertwined with other elements drawn from her imagination.
She studied drawing and fashion design in Paris. Her career with Juan Antonio Mañas began in 1975 with Hollywood scenes as a theme. Later, they will also deal with themes such as childhood or landscapes of memory. They have exhibited together in some of the most important galleries in the Spain, as well as in France, Italy and Portugal. Their work has been treated by prominent writers. They have been exhibiting at Sala Parés since 2006.
