Géneros de la pintura

11.12.2014 - 19.01.2015

Gonzalo Sicre (Cadiz, 1967) presents his sixth solo exhibition at Galeria Trama under the title: Géneros de la pintura (Painting genres). Part of this exhibition stems from the one he presented at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Caja de Burgos (CAB) in the summer of 2014.

It is an exhibition in which Sicre reconsiders classical genres of painting. As the curator and art critic Sema D’Acosta highlights when referring to the aforementioned exhibition at the CAB of Burgos, we find a reflection on genres of painting, understood in a classic manner but transposed to a contemporary environment.”

The artist explores the multiple possibilities of working with light, and the sensations that its effects can generate, particularly in the interior spaces, a key theme within the work of the artist. They are intriguing and mysterious “landscapes”, which generate doubt, that weren’t conceived to be protagonists, but which acquire a new identity in the hands of the artist. In them, the most important thing is what we don’t see but intuit because it is present in the work and of vital importance to the artist.

On the other hand, the light also emphasizes the theatrical character of these spaces, filling them with personality. It’s an intimate, controlled light that modifies the reality and emphasises some everyday objects, such as little bowls, glass vases and ceramic plates; the artist using the light to transform them into protagonists.

The work of Gonzalo Sicre is thus defined by the poetic character and conceptual content of his images, with their strong evocative power. His figurative painting focuses on landscapes, people and objects, that evanesce, captured in an oneiric tone, in a blue, silent, solitary and reflexive atmosphere.

Finally, quoting once again the critic Sema D’Acosta “As in Velasquez’s las Meninas, what lies beyond the canvas also forms an integral part of the scene, conditioning its constitution”

The career of this artist from Cadiz, now established in Cartagena, developed initially in the nineties, when he exhibited in different cities of the Levante: Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Cartagena and Cadiz, as well as across virtually the whole of Spain, in both solo and group exhibitions.
