About the artist

The late photographer Toni Catany is considered one of the great masters of contemporary Catalan photography. Through his captures, this great artist opens the doors to his most intimate and sincere world. Perhaps that is why his images give off a universal and timeless air that connects with people of different ages and nationalities.

The artist developed a photography of very diverse themes during his long career; from the unmistakable portraits of his travels (one of his great passions), to the delicacy of a simple flower, surrounded by a unique and ethereal environment created in his studio in the Raval district of Barcelona.

Catany was a self-taught artist who lived and worked in Barcelona from 1960 until his death in 2013. He held more than a hundred individual exhibitions around the world. Among the most emblematic exhibitions are the anthology at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) in 2000, ‘Toni Catany, l’artista en el seu paradís’, or the posthumous exhibition ‘D’anar i tornar’ at La Pedrera Foundation in 2016. In 2001, he received the National Prize of Photography and the National Prize of Plastic Arts, awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Spain and the Generalitat de Catalunya, respectively.
