About the artist

Josep Serra Llimona belongs to a family of artists. After studying Law he decided to take painting as a full time profession and started his artistic career at Ramon Rogent’s studio. In 1961 he was awarded a bursary from the Institute Français de Barcelone to complete his studies in Paris. He enrolled in l’Académie de la Grande Chaumière at the same time as the French artist Jacques Busse.

Josep Serra Llimona is essentially a painter of landscapes, but he also does interiors and still lifes in the technique of oil. He is also a skilful master of watercolour and has printed engravings and lithographies.

In 1961 he was awarded the First Prize of the Premi a la Pintura Jove competition organised by Sala Parés. Since 1968 he regularly exhibits in this Gallery, where an exhibition commemorating their collaboration during 45 years was held in 2012. In the same year he was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi de la Generalitat de Catalunya (Saint George’s Cross, the highest distinction that a person can receive from the Government of Catalonia).
