The Motel One hotel chain arrives in Spain, and chooses Barcelona as the premiere city, inaugurating a hotel with a location difficult to improve, as they declare: near Las Ramblas, Plaza Cataluña and the beach of La Barceloneta. Anaïs Senli, artist of the gallery, collaborates with an installation that combines papers, fabrics and metal sheets allegorizing “the natural world”.
We are talking about “Peya”, a hanging structure of 270 x 700 x 250 cm where the paper made of synthetic fiber, the stainless steel wire mesh, the copper fabric and the steel give shape to the rope. The title of the work refers to a fictitional root that travellers feed on in the novel “Rocannon’s World” by Ursula K. Le Guin, as the artist declares. “Peya is also a jellyfish, a lichen and a spider; a chthonic entity that feeds on fabulation, science fiction and speculative feminism (Donna Haraway). A tentacular muddle that sends invisible signals through the tip of its roots. A spider web that grows out of reach, generating a network of possible stories and collaborative survival strategies in an era defined by systemic and ecological urgencies.
The hotel, which has an area of 7200 m2 to accommodate the 301 rooms, combines a perfect location with a good design: the park of “La Ciutadella” gives it its name but also personality. It has based a special decoration and an original and attractive design that is a reflection of the flora, fauna and architectural features of the park in all its common areas, such as the lobby and the many terraces.
The goal is thus to extend the essence of the park even within the hotel while inviting guests to go out and get to know the corners of the city, through elements of visual design with plants and colorful murals, carried out by Lara Costafreda and Anaïs Senli.
